Hello, and welcome. I’m Avery Thomas. My practice is rooted in painting, though it naturally extends into production design, ceramics, and other forms of visual making. Regardless of the medium, I approach each work as a constructed world where memory, feeling, and experience are given physical form.
My paintings reflect what it means to feel: to love, to grieve, to question oneself, to be lost, to remember, and to carry experiences long after they've passed. Rather than painting faces or moments as they happened, I externalize the thoughts and emotions I tend to keep to myself. Painting has become the only way I know how to place them into the world.
I rarely rely on direct representation. Instead, I construct surreal spaces where ordinary objects appear in unnatural manifestations, becoming symbols that hold the emotional weight of the people and experiences they stand in for—quiet records of what cannot be said directly.
